What Do Fungal Toenails Look Like?

What does a fungus toenail look like? A fungus toenail can have several different looks. One type of fungus is more superficial and will have bright white spots on the nail plate. This type can usually be ground off the top of the nail. The other type of fungus infection will cause the nail plate to thicken. If untreated, the nail may become as much as a half inch in thickness. There can also be ridges in the nail and a buildup of debris under and around the nail plate. The nail will become yellow to brown, and even dark brown to black in color. The nail may also become very hard or honeycombed and brittle.
