Your heel may hurt first thing in the morning because it has been “resting” as you sleep at night and your plantar fascia has tightened. This strong band of tissues connects your toes to your heel. When it’s tight, it can pull on the heel, causing irritation. This is what happens upon getting out of bed and standing up— your body weight places pressure on the plantar fascia and causes pain to the insertion at the heel.  Your best bet is to stretch your feet before getting out of bed in the morning to help reduce some of the pain. Grab your toes and gently pull them back toward you until the arch of your foot feels loosened.
